We love learning games at our house. When I was asked to review the Brain Quest DVD Game, I was very excited. I have two children that fall within the recommended age range, and one just above it. I thought it would be a very fun game for them to play together and also learn from.
When it arrived, we ripped open the packaging and put it straight into the DVD player. To be honest, I was confused when I read the directions on the box (I was also confused by the need to even have a box since all that was in it was the DVD game and a deck of Brain Quest cards). The directions stated to insert it in the DVD player and use the arrow keys on the remote to play. Once you insert the DVD, it automatically starts playing. We thought for sure there would be some directions, so we took it out and tried again. It automatically played again. It lists a question and some choices and you use the remote to highlight your guess. When you hit enter, it tells you if you were right, but then explains the answer. I have to say, I was expecting my kids to hate it. At first, I didn't think it was so fun because it wasn't very game-like.
My kids absolutely loved it and played it for over an hour. One thing they loved was that they got to use the remote. They have also been walking around quoting me facts that they have learned from it. I would have said it seemed like a great solitary activity since there aren't rules or specific turns, but my kids are really enjoying playing it together. They all work together to try and figure out the answer. Some questions are hard and sometimes even I wasn't sure of the answer. The kids loved that it was challenging but then explained what the correct answer was and gave facts along with the answer.
If I had reviewed this by myself, I would have given it a much different review. My review probably wouldn't have been positive at all. My kids liked it a lot, and have played it quite a bit since we received it. I have overheard them telling their friends things they learned from the game. They have invited friends over to play the game with them. I think that speaks for itself. My kids like this game enough to play it with their friends even though it involves learning.

They should make a simulation of how to make DVD games work as a DVD game.
Well, so long as the target audience loves it, mission accomplished.
I agree about boxing of games. We have four different editions of DVD SceneIt! and they take up so much room, but you can't take them out of the box, really, because the insert has spaces for each item. I just wish they would've thought through the packaging process a bit more. All games for that matter. Does Yahtzee really need a box?
Trying to avoid all games related to TV, computer et al... Im sure it wont last long.
Hah!

The dreaded learning... They can't be seen learning.
BTW, thanks for your visit.
